Destiny, Fate and Free Will in Homers Odyssey Fate seems to defy humanity at every turn. A man may have his life planned out to the last second, but then some random force intervenes and he dies the second after he has completed his life plan. Some believe in fate, believing that our lives are predetermined from the moment we are born. Other people believe that everything is random, the result of some god rolling the dice in a universal poker game. Still other people believe that each and every person is in total control of his or her destiny, every step of the way. Who is to say which viewpoint is false? Every culture has a unique perception of the role of fate in our lives, and no group has the right answer, simply a†¦show more content†¦In this essay, I will examine popular Greek ideas concerning fate and their relationship to characters in Homers Odyssey. Greek cultures ideas on fate manifested themselves largely through their mythology. The length of a persons life, they believed, was determined by the three Fates, Clotho (spinner), Lachesus (Apportioner), and the fearsome Atropos (Inflexible). These aged children of Zeus and Themis-- know to the Greeks at the Moirai--would unscrupulously spin out, measure, and cut the thread of ones life. The balance of power between these three women and their father Zeus is difficult to understand. In Book XXVI of The Iliad, we see the king of the gods fretting over the impending death of his mortal son Sarpedon. Unable to cope with the idea of his noble childs death, Zeus inquires of Hera Shall I pluck [Sarpedon] up, now, while hes still alive... or beat him down at Patroclus hands at last (Iliad 16.519-21). In the end, Zeus allows Sarpedon to be slain as the Fates have willed. Though Zeus has the power to override his daughters, the great orderer of the cosmos sees that doing so in this c ase would be beyond reason. People Believe In Myths Mythology Every race of humans and most cultures believed in a myth or type of myth at one time. Sometimes a myth can be something small like a teacher whos said to be an alien. Yet some are quite big and still believed in today like the loch ness monster. Myths have been around since the beginning of time and will be there to the end. All of us no one, and weve all told one. Probably the biggest myth of all that was believed in by two different cultures was that of Greek and Roman mythology. The list of gods go on and on, to name few Id have to say Zeus, Artemis, Atlas, Athena, Cronus, Hera, Rhea, Hermes, Hades, and the god of the sea, Poseidon. In Roman myth they just changed the names to names like Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Pluto, and Uranus. There was also Demo-gods who were half-man half-god; these were usually heroes like Hercules and Achilles. The strongest of these gods was Zeus who wielded the mighty thunderbolt. He was the king of the gods. His wife was origina lly his sister and her name is Hera. She was the goddess of birth. Some of the most told Greek stories were these as I found out in the book Greek and Roman Mythology from A to Z. They told the story of Atlas, doomed to hold the sky forever (21). Medusa, if you looked at her you turned to stone (77). Yet some of the most popular stories were of Zeus and his love affairs which all together he had thirteen (125). Scandinavia had many myths as well called Norse mythology. I learned from the book Norse Gods and Giants that According to them Ymir the Blackstone 3 Frost giant was the first living thing (1). After that men grew from his fur during his sleep. Odin was their leader (14). He rode and eight-legged horse and claimed that the frost giants are evil and therefore should be destroyed (154). Odin had a son named Thor, he was the strongest of the Norse gods. They called Thor the god of thunder and sometimes the hammer thrower. Unlike Greek and Roman myth the Norse gods did not meddle in human affairs. Most stories of gods didnt include humans. When there was a story of a great hero the gods were not involved almost at all. Most myths have been proven to be false but some still exist today. They were improved on by some cultures at times but eventually they faded away because most never really believed in them in the first place. Use Bingo to Teach Any School Subject Bingo is a wonderful teaching tool to have at your fingertips no matter what you are teaching. You can even make it up as you go along! The basic premise of Bingo is simple: players start with a grid filled with answers and they cover up spaces as the corresponding item is called from the Bingo caller. Winners make a complete line going vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Or, you can play Black Out which means the winner is the first person who covers all of the spots on the card. Preparation There are a few ways you can prepare for playing Bingo in your classroom. Buy a Bingo set from a teacher supply store. Of course, this is the easiest way, but we teachers don’t make too much money so this option may not make too much sense.A cheaper option requires you to prepare all of the Bingo boards ahead of time, making sure that all of the boards are configured differently from each other.For older students, you can hand over some of the preparation to them. Prepare one Bingo board with all of the options filled in. Also, keep a copy of a blank board. Make copies of each page, one per student. Give the children time to cut apart the pieces and paste them wherever they want on the blank boards.The most teacher-friendly way to do Bingo is to give each child a blank piece of paper and have them fold it into sixteenths. Then they get to write the terms into their bingo sheet from your list (on the chalkboard or overhead) and voila! Everyone has their own unique Bingo board! Or, say a short word and ask the kids to identify the beginning sound. Vocabulary:  In the Bingo chart boxes, put the vocabulary words your class is currently studying. You will read out the definitions and the kids have to match them up. Example: You say to find and bring back and the students cover up retrieve. Parts of Speech:  Get creative with using Bingo to help kids remember the parts of speech. For instance, read a sentence and ask the kids to place a marker on the verb in that sentence. Or, ask the kids to look for a verb that begins with a g. Make sure there are all different types of words that begin with that letter so that they really have to think about it. Math Subtraction, Addition, Multiplication, Division:  Write the answers to applicable problems in the Bingo boxes. You call out the problem. This is a great way to reinforce the math facts that kids must memorize. For example, you say, 6 X 5 and the students cover 30 on their game sheets. Fractions:  In the Bingo boxes, draw various shapes cut into portions with some of the parts shaded. Example: draw a circle cut into fourths and shade one of the fourths. People who do not believe in the state endorsed religion are killed. Also, certain scientists and doctors are killed if they practice abortions or use certain medical procedures. Margaret Atwood is trying to show people that this type of government could be the next path in American society if things continue go the same way they are! going. I feel that the time before the revolution is not as bad as it was depicted. There are not mutant babies being born, nuclear meltdowns, or men having total control of women. I do not think that this society would be able to be instituted at this present time. In the twentieth century, so many people have struggled to receive fair treatment in America and I do not think that these people would sit around while their rights are being taken away from them. Also other countries probably would have stepped in so that a totalitarian government would not be instituted. Margaret Atwood had the novel end the way it did for a few reasons. First to show that this government did not succeed, like every other totalitarian government ever in existence. She also wanted to show how other countries responded to this new government. It also left you wondering what had happened to Offred and if she was able to escape out of the country. The Handmaid?s Tale is a novel trying to show the possibility and what a totalitarian government in America could be like. Only a few powerful people have rights. Women have the fewest amount of rights. Margaret Atwood is telling us that if society as a whole continues the way it is going, we are on a crash course to the type of society she has depicted. Personally, I feel that the society depicted could never happen in America and if it was instituted that the people would revolt and bring back a democratic government.

Trajan, the Roman Empire and Soldier Born Marcus Ulpius Traianus, Trajan was a soldier who spent most of his life involved in campaigns. When delivered the news that he was adopted by Roman Emperor Nerva, and even after Nerva died, Trajan remained in Germany until he had completed his campaign. His major campaigns as emperor were against the Dacians, in 106, which vastly increased the Roman imperial coffers, and against the Parthians, beginning in 113, which was not a clear and decisive victory. His imperial name was Imperator Caesar Divi Nervae filius Nerva Traianus Optimus Augustus Germanicus Dacicus Parthicus. He reigned as Roman emperor from A.D. 98-117. Although we dont know the details, Trajan set up cash subsidies to help raise poor children. He is well known for his building projects. Trajan also built an artificial harbor at Ostia. Birth and Death Future Roman emperor, Marcus Ulpius Traianus or Trajan was born at Italica, in Spain, on September 18, A.D. 53. After having appointed Hadrian his successor, Trajan died while returning to Italy from the east. Trajan died on 9 August A.D. 117, after suffering a stroke, in the Cilician town of Selinus. Family of Origin His family came from Italica, in Spanish Baetica. His father was Ulpius Trajanaus and his mother was named Marcia. Trajan had a 5 year  older sister named Ulpia Marciana. Trajan was adopted by the Roman Emperor Nerva and made his heir, which entitled him to call himself the son of Nerva: CAESARI DIVI NERVAE F, literally, the son of the divine Caesar Nerva. Titles and Honors Trajan was officially designated optimus best or optimus princeps best chief in 114. He provided 123 days of public celebration for his Dacian triumph and had his Dacian and Germanic successes recorded in his official title. He was posthumously made divine (divus) as had his predecessor (Caesar Divus Nerva). Tacitus refers to the beginning of Trajans reign as a most blessed age (beatissimum saeculum). He was also made Pontifex Maximus. Sources Literary sources on Trajan include Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Cassius Dio, Dio of Prusa, Aurelius Victor and Eutropius.
